Cuyahoga Valley
Community Church
Broadview Heights, Ohio
The Cuyahoga Valley church was a
relatively new congregation--only a few years old -- and was meeting
in a local school. Their growth had been significant even without
a building of their own, and the church anticipated that the
growth would continue if they had the space. Stepping out on
faith, they purchased a highly visible new site, at the Broadview
Heights exit off I-77.
When they came to Akers Church
Building Services, they already had a master plan and basic design
done by another architectural firm. The construction cost
estimates the other firm gave them were high, and to reduce
them--they were told--would make the building very plain. Some
felt that the location of the new site, in an area of new, very
nice homes, needed a building that was attractive, that did not
"look like a warehouse," as one of them expressed it. A
couple of their leaders had seen some of our designs, and wanted
to speak with us. After consultation with the church and with the
previous designer, it was decided that Akers CBS would complete
the project.
The project involved extensive
revision of the initial design, as well as some major changes
because of problems with the site that were discovered as the work
progressed. The First Phase was a multi-purpose auditorium seating
about 475, with offices and classrooms. The lower floor
--additional classrooms--was left unfinished, to be completed
later.
